Banquet 2016: Monopoly!

The last Thursday night of the summer was the night everyone was waiting for: banquet! This year’s theme was Monopoly. Campers got ready for the night while counselors put up decorations.

When campers entered the dining hall, they were greeted by the characters from the skit that would be performed later on. The cafeteria was completely decorated for the theme, complete with a life size board on the floor.  There were also banners of Mr. Monopoly around the room, along with various property and chance cards. Each camper got a ditty, which is a short rhyme about them, on different pieces from the game. Shortly after all the campers got to their seats, dinner was served, which was a burger bar. Campers got to go up and choose toppings to put on their burgers and French fries.

Once all of the campers finished their dinner, counselors started the skit. It was about a few campers playing Monopoly during a rainy day at Camp Nubar. As the campers played the board game, in an alternate game world, the pieces came to life and acted it out. The evil banker, Ms. Monopolomartian, owned all of camp’s property. The pieces, which were the car, the top hat, the dog, and the thimble, wanted to take the property away from her. They bought places like the valley and gaga ball. In the end, the game pieces got what they wanted and made camp fun again. The campers loved it and were laughing all throughout the skit.

After the skit, dessert was served, which was rice krispie treats decorated to look like dice. After all of the activity awards were given out, campers and counselors went upstairs to the gym for one final dance of the summer. Everyone had a great time and it was surely a banquet to remember!

Color War 2016!

On Tuesday night, third session activities were interrupted by the highly anticipated Color War break! Campers and counselors went to the basketball courts after the fire alarm went off because some head staff members had been “kidnapped.” After a suspenseful few minutes, they revealed that it was Color War. The blue team, Blue Typhoon, was led by Peter Boyadjian and Alex Kew, and the gold team, Golden Vesuvius, was led by Stephanie Chouljian and Steven Krolian.

As the tradition goes, day one started off with rope burn, but because the wood was so wet, no one won that event. The rest of the day was filled with tennis, steal the bacon, archery, gaga ball, waterfront events, and volleyball. Day two consisted of banner presentations, junior and senior cheers, song presentations, dodgeball, and Armenian night.

The third and last day of color war is the day of apache, which is when both teams participate in a long relay race to determine who the winner is. At the start of apache, blue had a 2 minute and five second head start, which allowed them a huge advantage. There are many events within apache, including running, eating, archery, soccer, puzzles, hopscotch, and the Armenian test. The gold team caught up a few times, but in the end, the Blue Typhoon secured the win! Shortly after the gold team finished, the shaving cream fight broke out around flagpole. After that, everyone went down to the lake, cabin by cabin, to jump in and get cleaned off. Campers and counselors had a fun and exciting three days.

Alumni Country Club Day

Monday was far from an ordinary day here at Camp Nubar.  On Sunday night, after Open House ended, campers and counselors got to sign up for activities for the next day, which was Country Club Day. Both recent and older alumni came back to be guest instructors for the day. There were some of the regular activities such as basketball, camp craft, and fitness, along with different ones like choreg making, knitting, legos, and improv.

As if getting to sleep in for an extra hour on Monday morning wasn’t enough of a treat, campers and counselors were surprised with a waffle, ice cream and yogurt bar for breakfast.

After a relaxing morning, the campers were excited to try out their new activities. Some of the highlights of the day included being able to make choreg, building legos, learning how to knit, playing improvisational games, doing rope burn, and playing basketball with a professional. Campers loved having a chance to take part in activities they might never be able to do anywhere else.

Though it rained throughout the day, campers, counselors, and the alumni had a fun and relaxing day. The day ended with movie night, featuring Mulan.

Open House 2016

This past Sunday was Camp Nubar’s annual Open House when family, friends, and alumni can visit from all over the world! With over 300 visitors, everyone enjoyed the beautiful weather that we were so lucky to have.

In the morning, Father Simeon Odabashian, Diocesan Vicar (Eastern), celebrated Soorp Badarak in the pavilion, which visitors were able to attend.

After church, campers and counselors, along with their guests, headed over to the basketball courts for the Armenian presentation, which featured music, a dance, and a skit. Campers and counselors sang the Armenian national anthem, Mer Hayrenik, accompanied by some ukuleles. All 150 campers sang the AGBU anthem and danced to Vaylele by Jaq Hagopian, which they had been practicing for the past week. Some also performed a skit about the 110th anniversary of AGBU.

After lunch was served, two staff members took a group of visitors on a tour to show them the breathtaking sights of Camp Nubar.

Later on in the day there was the horse show, which featured some of camp’s best riders display their skills. There was also a tennis tournament for visitors to watch. The last show of the day was at the picturesque Lake Arax, to showcase some of camp’s best water-skiers.

Visitors loved and enjoyed all of the performances, while reuniting with some of their best friends. We look forward to seeing you all next summer!
