Our Activities Center/Dining Hall is the heart of many of our indoor activities. It is a 14,500 square foot, state-of-the-art facility with full-size, indoor basketball and volleyball courts; theatrical stage; computer lab with a high-speed Internet backbone; sound and lighting system; Armenian classroom; modern kitchen; and an outdoor deck overlooking our beautiful Lake Arax.
Nature is the perfect setting for Camp Nubar’s special St. Nerses Shnorhali Chapel built in 1972 and blessed that year by His Beatitude Archbishop Torkom Manoogian. Campers and counselors find time for reflection and prayer as they participate in Badarak services led by visiting clergy each Sunday.
Campers and counselors live together in cabins assigned by age and gender. Cabins are equipped with electricity, running hot and cold water, clean beds, showers, sinks, toilets, and shelving for personal belongings…basic yet comfortable.
Lake Arax, a natural spring-fed lake nestled among the majestic Catskill Mountains, is the centerpiece of Camp Nubar providing countless activities for campers and counselors. We maintain modern docks and accessories for swimming at all levels of expertise. In addition, there are rowboats, canoes, sailboats, pedal boats, fishing rods and tackle and a motorboat for waterskiing and tubing. All waterfront activities are supervised by qualified American Red Cross Water Safety Instructors (WSI) and certified American Red Cross lifeguards. Instruction leading to Red Cross certification in swimming, lifesaving and boating is also offered.
We maintain our own horse barn located on the camp premises. During the summer, all of the horses reside in the barn and graze in the acres of surrounding pastures. Horseback riding classes are taught in our professional size corral and on numerous riding trails throughout the 365 acres of campgrounds allowing campers to get a full appreciation of the forestlands. All equestrian classes are taught by qualified and certified professionals.
Camp Nubar’s extensive grounds allow us to offer a varied sports program. Soccer, softball, basketball, volleyball and more are enjoyed outside. In addition, our archery program has its own field where campers learn the sport under the guidance of our certified instructors.
We have three outdoor tennis courts on which campers learn and improve their skills of the game and can participate in camp-wide tennis tournaments. Racquets and balls are provided during class.
Arts & Crafts and Ceramics classes meet in our spacious, well-lit Art Studio. With two professional kilns and pottery wheels, campers have all the tools necessary to create and bring home vases, bowls, wall hangings and more. Our large, communal tables provide a place for campers to learn everything from the fine art of drawing to traditional projects like lanyards and potholders.
We offer instruction in digital photography and traditional 35mm photography with a professional dark room fully equipped with everything needed to take, develop and print black and white photographs.
We employ a Certified Health Director who resides in the Infirmary and is available 24-hours-a-day to administer any health-related needs of the Camp. The infirmary, a winterized and heated building, is well stocked with all the health, safety and first aid needs of the campers.
We operate a small camp store known as “Canteen” where campers may buy beverages and snacks in limited quantities at designated times. The Canteen also sells Camp Nubar clothing, stamps, batteries, toiletries and stationary items.
We own numerous commercial-sized washing machines and dryers. Camper laundry is washed, dried, and folded by a staff member once a week on a rotating basis. Please ensure all items of clothing and personal items are properly labeled.
